The Kano State Government, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced an indefinite postponement of the resumption of primary and post-primary schools for the 2024/2025 academic year. The postponement, which was scheduled for September 8 and 9, 2024, was attributed to unspecified “urgent reasons.”
Balarabe Kiru, Director of Public Enlightenment at the Kano State Ministry of Education, made the announcement in a statement issued on Saturday. He also noted that a revised resumption date would soon be announced by the state’s Commissioner for Education, Umar Doguwa. Kiru added that the decision was made to improve the learning environment for the students, with further information to be shared in due course.
In a related development, the Edo State Government has also indefinitely postponed its school resumption due to the ongoing fuel price hike. However, the All Progressives Congress (APC) criticized the decision, calling it a “political gimmick.” APC’s Publicity Secretary, Peter Uwadiae-Enosorogbe, expressed concern, stating that the government’s decision would negatively impact the children’s education and called for a reversal. He also pointed out that fuel price hikes were not new and should not disrupt the academic calendar.
Edo State has recently faced challenges in its education sector, with Uwadiae-Enosorogbe highlighting the state’s declining performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), where it ranked 26th, compared to higher positions in previous years.
