The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has cautioned that President Bola Tinubu may struggle to gain the support of northern voters in the 2027 elections if the insecurity in the region continues unabated. Speaking in an interview, AYCF National President Yerima Shettima acknowledged that many of Nigeria’s challenges predated the current administration but emphasized that Tinubu’s response to these issues would significantly impact his re-election prospects.
Shettima noted that northern voters’ loyalty could shift if the administration fails to address insecurity and uphold its promises of inclusive governance. He further reflected on the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, during which insecurity rose, but many northerners remained loyal due to regional affiliation. He stressed, however, that the region’s current challenges are deeply rooted in systemic governance failures over decades.
While the AYCF is willing to give the Tinubu administration the benefit of the doubt, Shettima urged the President to take decisive action to combat insecurity, revive the economy, and address communal crises. If these issues remain unresolved, northern voters may lean towards candidates who better represent their concerns in 2027.
