The Borno State Police Command has re-arrested Abubakar Mohammed, a convict who escaped from the Maiduguri Correctional Facility after its collapse due to severe flooding last week.
The recent floods in Maiduguri caused widespread devastation, submerging houses and structures, and even allowing wild animals to escape from the state’s livestock park. The disaster also caused the collapse of the prison’s fence, enabling several inmates to flee. Initially, prison officials denied any escapees, but later revealed that 274 inmates were unaccounted for.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Borno Police Public Relations Officer SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil confirmed the arrest of Abubakar Mohammed, who was serving a sentence for culpable homicide. The fugitive was spotted by a resident of Bulakara Ward in Gubio LGA on September 15, 2024, and quickly reported to the police. A police patrol team responded swiftly, arresting the escapee.
Mohammed is set to be returned to the Nigerian Correctional Service, and efforts are ongoing to track down other escaped inmates.
