The Lagos State Government has confirmed that the increase in boarding fees for model colleges is essential to ensure better welfare for students. Mr. Ganiu Lawal, Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, explained that the current N35,000 boarding fee, unchanged since 2021, is no longer sustainable in 2024. Starting from the 2024/2025 academic session, the boarding fee will be raised to N100,000 per term.
Lawal emphasized that the decision, though difficult, is necessary for covering the costs of feeding, janitorial services, and other expenses tied to maintaining the boarding facilities. He also noted that the state government continues to provide free education, infrastructure, and security in all public schools, including model colleges, while bearing the cost of WAEC examination fees for students.
Parents have been urged to understand and support the decision for the well-being of their children.
