A tense moment unfolded as gunshots were heard during the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) attempt to arrest former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, at the Kogi State Governor’s lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night, as reported by Naija News. The EFCC’s attempt to apprehend Bello, who has been facing ₦80.2 billion money laundering charges, was met with resistance from security operatives stationed at the lodge.
Earlier in the day, Bello had voluntarily appeared before the EFCC for questioning. However, his media office later raised concerns about the commission’s intentions, despite the former governor’s cooperation.
A confrontation between the EFCC and the security personnel at the lodge escalated, leading to the reported gunfire. According to a Channels Television report, Kogi’s current governor, Ahmed Ododo, intervened and whisked Bello away from the scene.
In April, the EFCC declared Bello wanted in connection with financial crimes amounting to ₦80.2 billion. This recent attempt to arrest him followed an earlier raid on his Abuja residence in Wuse, where his successor, Governor Ododo, allegedly helped him evade arrest.
