EFCC Arrests 29 Internet Fraud Suspects in Abuja
On September 18, 2024, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested 29 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud, commonly referred to as ‘Yahoo-Yahoo,’ in the Gwagwalada area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The arrests were made following a successful operation by the EFCC’s Abuja Zonal Directorate, based on credible intelligence. The EFCC also seized 32 mobile phones from the suspects, who are expected to be charged in court upon conclusion of investigations.
EFCC Rejects Former Governor Yahaya Bello’s Protocol Breach
In another development, the EFCC reportedly turned away former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, after he attempted to visit the agency’s office on September 18, 2024, accompanied by current Governor Usman Ododo. According to an inside source, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede deemed the visit inappropriate due to a breach of protocol, as no official invitation had been extended to the sitting governor, who holds immunity.
The EFCC maintained that it will not be swayed by political influences and criticized Bello’s team for spreading false information about his custody status. The anti-graft agency emphasized that all individuals, regardless of their political status, must follow due process.
