The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has assured residents of Abuja a safe and secure environment ahead of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebration on October 1. In a statement issued on Monday, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed that comprehensive security measures are in place.
According to the statement, the police have deployed adequate personnel and equipment, including Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) teams, anti-riot gear, and visibility policing to ensure the safety of the public. Traffic diversions will also be implemented in areas expected to host large gatherings, such as Central Area and Eagle Square.
The FCT Police have urged residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities through emergency lines to prevent any disruptions during the celebrations.
These preparations come amid plans by some Nigerians to hold a #FearlessInOctober1 protest, expressing their dissatisfaction with the current administration’s economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the devaluation of the naira.
Organizers of the #FearlessOctober1 protest have stated their intention to proceed with the demonstration despite potential opposition from law enforcement. In a formal letter to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, they emphasized their constitutional right to protest and requested security arrangements to safeguard protesters during the event.
