Nigeria’s Minister for Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has reaffirmed that the Tinubu government is making significant progress in addressing the country’s security challenges. Speaking at an international conference hosted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday, Idris emphasized that national security remains a top priority under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The event, themed “Interrogating the Root Cause of Violence in the Sahel and Its Impact on Nigeria’s Territorial Integrity,” gathered experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to analyze the violence in the Sahel region and its effects on Nigeria. In his speech, Idris highlighted Tinubu’s commitment to combating insecurity by increasing investments in technology, personnel, and intelligence.
The Sahel region, marked by violence, terrorism, drug trafficking, and arms smuggling, poses a significant threat to Nigeria due to its porous borders. Idris pointed out that this spillover effect has strained the country’s internal security and economy. He emphasized that these challenges stem from socioeconomic marginalization, environmental degradation, weak governance, and transnational organized crime.
“No single country can tackle these issues alone,” Idris noted, stressing that Nigeria has ramped up collaboration with neighboring countries and international partners. He commended the Multinational Joint Task Force and other regional initiatives aimed at stabilizing the Sahel.
On the domestic front, Idris highlighted Tinubu’s commitment to security through increased funding for equipment, manpower, and intelligence gathering. He described these efforts as critical steps in the administration’s ongoing war against insecurity.
Idris also urged experts at the summit to explore innovative strategies to address the underlying causes of violence in the Sahel. The conference featured key stakeholders from national and international spheres, including former head of state General Abdulsalami Abubakar and keynote speaker Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas. President Tinubu, represented by National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu, was among the distinguished guests, alongside the Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Musa, and other government officials.
