President Bola Tinubu’s administration has introduced a new initiative to help Nigerians convert their petrol-powered vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) through a “convert now, pay later” scheme. The government unveiled an online platform where vehicle owners can apply to convert their cars from petrol to CNG, with the option to pay for the conversion in affordable monthly installments.
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) announced the development, highlighting that the scheme aims to make the transition to CNG more accessible, offering competitive payment plans that fit users’ budgets. The quick online application process is designed to provide a smooth and hassle-free experience for drivers across the country.
As part of the Presidential CNG Initiative, the government has established CNG conversion centers across several states, including Abuja, Ogun, Ekiti, and Nasarawa. The goal is to convert one million vehicles to CNG by 2027, which is expected to reduce transportation costs by up to 40%.
This initiative arrives at a time when Nigerians are grappling with soaring fuel prices, which have risen to between ₦950.22 and ₦1,100 per litre, up from ₦770. The switch to CNG is seen as a practical solution to curb rising transportation expenses.
