A controversy erupted on social media as Nigerians reacted sharply to Bayo Onanuga, the presidential spokesman, for his comments regarding President Bola Tinubu’s travels. The backlash followed the revelation that President Tinubu had left the United Kingdom for Paris during a scheduled two-week vacation.
In a tweet addressing the situation, Onanuga stated, “President Tinubu is on leave for two weeks. He is not restricted to the UK. It is his private time. He can go anywhere he so desires. He is still observing his leave.” However, this remark did not sit well with many Nigerians, who criticized the use of public funds for the president’s personal vacations.
Social media users quickly pointed out that while Tinubu has the freedom to travel, the funding of these trips raises serious concerns about government transparency and accountability. One user, @Morris_Monye, stated, “Mr. Bayo Onanuga saying the President can go anywhere he likes and do whatever he pleases during his leave is a big slap on Nigerians. Is it not the country’s jet, fuel, resources that he is using for his personal leave?”
Other users voiced similar frustrations, questioning whether the president was using government resources for personal travel. @Udoh_D wrote, “Is he using his private jet to travel around the globe on his private time, or is he spending government money?”
Criticism also focused on the disconnect between the administration and the struggles faced by ordinary Nigerians. @belloinuwa emphasized the need for empathy, stating, “You are doing more harm than good and are sustaining the impression of Mr. President being out of touch with his people.”
