A member of the Yoruba Nation group, Adejumo Lateef, has reportedly died while in custody, confirmed by the Nigerian Correctional Service on Wednesday. The tragic development occurred as 27 other individuals were brought before Court 3 of the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan for arraignment.
Lateef, the 18th defendant, and others are being prosecuted for their alleged role in the April 13, 2024, invasion of the Government Secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan, where they attempted to declare a sovereign Yoruba Nation. The case, labeled suit number I/51c/2024, is presided over by Justice K. B. Olawoyin.
The defendants face charges including conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms, unlawful assembly, treasonable felony, and treason. The case has been postponed to November 6th, 8th, and 13th for further proceedings due to some defendants lacking legal representation.
