The Lagos State Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Agnes Funmi, has suggested that the union may reject the proposed ₦85,000 minimum wage if other states decide to offer higher amounts. This response follows Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s announcement during a recent interview on Channels TV, where he stated his administration’s plan to implement the ₦85,000 minimum wage for civil servants in Lagos.
In his remarks on the program “One-On-One with Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” the governor emphasized that the wage was determined by affordability and capacity, rather than competition with other states. He also expressed hope for future increases, potentially raising the minimum wage to ₦100,000.
Reacting to the proposal, Agnes acknowledged the NLC’s acceptance of the wage under current conditions but noted that it hinges on the government’s ongoing infrastructure improvements. She stated, “If there is any state that declares more than ₦85,000 tomorrow, we will reject that amount.” The union is currently engaged in discussions with the government regarding affordable housing and other benefits for workers, indicating a willingness to negotiate further if higher wages are offered elsewhere.
