The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), is in talks to transfer the management of the national grid to Independent System Operators. This is part of efforts to enforce stricter discipline in grid management as outlined in the Electricity Act 2023.
The national grid suffered another collapse on Saturday morning, marking the third incident in one week. NERC revealed that the latest collapse was caused by an explosion at the Jebba transmission station. By 1 PM on Saturday, power had been restored in 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
In a statement shared on its X handle, NERC expressed concern over the increasing frequency of grid disturbances, which have caused major outages across the country. The commission is set to conduct a public hearing to investigate the recurring grid failures and develop long-term solutions.
