Controversial Nigerian celebrity Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, is at risk of facing new criminal charges following a panel report that uncovered alleged corruption within the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). The panel was set up by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, to investigate claims that Bobrisky bribed officials to serve his jail term in a private apartment and paid Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) staff to dismiss money laundering charges.
Bobrisky, who was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for naira abuse and released in August, claimed he bribed correctional officials and enjoyed favorable treatment during his detention. However, the panel’s findings, as reported by Sunday PUNCH, revealed no evidence supporting these claims.
The investigative report recommended filing defamation charges against Bobrisky for allegedly tarnishing the image of the NCoS with false accusations. The Department of State Services (DSS) was also advised to investigate possible bribery of the EFCC and NCoS officials. If substantiated, further charges under the Corrupt Practices Act may follow.
The panel also recommended disciplinary action against several NCoS officers, including former Controller Ben Rabbi-Freeman, for procedural misconduct related to Bobrisky’s detention transfer and record falsification. Additionally, the report called for comprehensive audits and oversight mechanisms to curb corruption and maintain integrity within the custodial system.
