Members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives have criticized Works Minister David Umahi over deteriorating road conditions across the country. The comments came during a hearing where Bede Obiora, the Ministry’s Director of Bridges representing Umahi, attributed the poor state of roads to a lack of funds.
Aderemi Oseni, a lawmaker representing Oyo State’s Ibarapa/Ido Federal Constituency, challenged Umahi’s stance, questioning why the Ministry continued to award new road contracts despite claiming resource constraints. Oseni argued that the Minister’s explanations seemed indifferent to the country’s pressing infrastructure needs.
“You’ve told us about resource issues, yet the Ministry is allocating resources to lower-priority projects,” Oseni remarked, emphasizing that Umahi’s focus should be on repairing the existing failing road infrastructure rather than issuing new contracts.
Oseni also highlighted that despite receiving an additional N300 billion in a supplementary budget last year, the Ministry has not made significant progress. “We don’t want more road contracts that are not being executed,” he said, questioning Umahi’s commitment and strategy for addressing Nigeria’s infrastructure crisis.
