At its 48th Annual General Scientific Meeting in Abuja, the West African College of Physicians (WACP) called on doctors to remain in their home countries to support the healthcare sector. Outgoing President Dr. Rose Macauley appealed to healthcare professionals not to join the “Japa” trend (mass migration) and emphasized the importance of contributing to the regional healthcare system.
Macauley highlighted the need for governments to create a conducive environment by addressing doctors’ needs, ensuring adequate resources, and implementing solutions that can help curb the migration of medical professionals. Dr. Mamadou Mourtalla, the College’s President-elect, also stressed the urgent need for policy interventions, noting that retaining young African doctors is essential to addressing the healthcare challenges facing the continent.
