The Nigerian Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to refund Kebbi and Nasarawa states a total of N24 billion for airport projects completed on behalf of the federal government. This includes N15 billion for Kebbi State and N9 billion for Nasarawa State.
The decision followed a report presented by Senator Manu Haruna, Chairman of the Committee on Local and Foreign Debts. The president had previously submitted this request in May 2024, highlighting that aviation matters, including airport infrastructure, fall under the federal government’s jurisdiction according to the constitution.
Senators supported the request, citing the essential role of airport infrastructure in national development and addressing insecurity. Senator Aminu Abbas emphasized the critical role of airports, while Senator Isah Jibrin noted that Kogi State, which recently received federal approval to build an airport, would also seek a similar refund upon project completion.
The Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, presided over the session, and the request was unanimously approved through a voice vote.
