The Niger State House of Assembly has raised concerns following the takeover of the Nagwamase military cantonment in Kontagora by bandits. This facility, a vital training site for the Nigerian Army’s artillery corps, spans large areas from Kontagora to Mariga Local Government.
During a session on Tuesday, Abdullahi Isah, representing the Kontagora II Constituency, presented a motion detailing that bandits have set up at least eight camps within the former military grounds, pushing residents of over 23 farming communities to flee from relentless attacks.
“This camp’s occupation by bandits has created a serious security crisis impacting both Kontagora and Mariga,” Isah stated. The area has seen a rise in assaults, with residents abducted and still held by gunmen.
Niger State legislators are calling for urgent state and military intervention to reclaim the training camp and secure the region, allowing displaced residents to safely return to their homes.
