The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has labeled the ongoing strike a comprehensive, long-term effort involving top university officials, including vice-chancellors and bursars.
The indefinite strike, which began on Monday, was initiated due to four months of unpaid salaries, forcing universities nationwide to halt operations. SSANU National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, confirmed nearly full compliance from university staff, who remain committed to striking until their salary arrears are paid.
“No government representative has reached out,” said Ibrahim, underscoring the union’s determination to continue the strike.
Despite Dr. Tunji Alausa’s recent appointment as the Minister of Education, the government has yet to engage with union leaders. SSANU Vice President Abdussobur Salaam also expressed disappointment at the lack of response.
On Sunday, SSANU and NASU issued a joint statement reaffirming demands for withheld back pay, improved benefits, earned allowances, and implementation of a longstanding 2009 agreement with the Federal Government.
The National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has also announced a nationwide protest beginning November 6, with a plan to escalate to the Ministry of Finance if their salary and agreement demands remain unmet by November 14.
