The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, announced that political parties will sign a Peace Accord on November 8, 2024, in preparation for the upcoming Ondo State Governorship Election on November 16. This peace initiative, organized by the National Peace Committee in collaboration with INEC, aims to ensure a smooth and conflict-free electoral process.
Speaking from Abuja on Thursday, Yakubu highlighted that INEC has identified potential conflict zones in Ondo and has briefed security agencies to facilitate comprehensive conflict mapping. During INEC’s fourth quarterly meeting with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), he also confirmed that a final election readiness review will take place next week, involving stakeholders, officials, security agencies, and transport providers.
Yakubu further noted that the distribution period for Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) has concluded, with 64,273 cards collected out of 89,777, achieving a collection rate of 71.6%. He commended CSOs for assisting in voter mobilization and stated that INEC will publish detailed PVC collection statistics by polling unit on its website.
Additionally, he praised the progress made in voter accreditation, result upload processes, media and observer accreditations, and logistics preparations, especially for personnel and materials traveling to riverine and remote areas. These measures are set to ensure efficient management of voting and result collation on Election Day.
