Amnesty International has sharply criticized the recent evictions and demolitions in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) overseen by Nyesom Wike’s FCT Ministry. The human rights organization accuses the Nigerian government, led by President Bola Tinubu, of exploiting “insecurity” as a pretext for displacing FCT communities, allegedly to hand over lands to private developers.
Amnesty International expressed concern that the FCT administration’s actions have left residents homeless amid an economic crisis, deepening poverty and uncertainty. In a statement released on Sunday, the organization condemned the evictions as illegal under international and regional human rights laws, highlighting the severe social and economic impacts on affected families.
The statement further noted: “The use of ‘insecurity’ as a justification for violently evicting FCT communities, only to repurpose the land for private development, is an irony that cannot be ignored. The instability, loss of livelihoods, and disruption to children’s education have exacerbated suffering during Nigeria’s worst economic crisis in three decades.”
Amnesty urged the FCT authorities to halt what it described as “ruthless” evictions, asserting that the administration’s actions degrade human dignity and violate the rights of impoverished communities in the region.
