In a landmark policy aimed at enhancing educational access, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has announced mandatory, free education for all children within the state, starting from January 2025. The policy will cover grades one through three in public schools, ensuring that every child in Abia has access to early education regardless of background.
This decision aligns with the Abia Child’s Rights Law of 2006, and parents or guardians who fail to send their children to school will face legal consequences, explained Prince Okey Kanu, Abia’s State Commissioner for Information, during a press briefing.
In addition to education, the governor’s administration is addressing infrastructure needs, including road repairs and urgent work on the Osisioma flyover, which has shown signs of wear after just two years. Governor Otti has also made strides in fiscal management, having reportedly cleared 90% of the 191 billion naira debt left by the previous administration without resorting to additional loans.
