On World Youth Day, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has attributed the recent #EndBadGovernance protests to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the widespread poverty in Nigeria.
In a statement released by Chief Ralphs Okey Nwosu, National Chairman of the ADC, the party highlighted that the protests were a direct response to the perceived negligence of political leaders, who, according to Nwosu, live in opulence while over 60% of the population suffers from hunger, unemployment, and poverty.
Nwosu stated: “With hunger, unemployment, and poverty ravaging over 60% of the populace while political leaders lavish in opulence, the youths had to resort to #EndBadGovernance protest. Frustrated by the attitude of people in authority and the APC establishment, the youths who are not ordinarily prone to protests have to vent their anger.”
He urged for a moment of reflection as the country observes World Youth Day, underscoring the need to address the root causes of such discontent.
The ADC, known for its commitment to youth and gender representation, noted its active role in recent elections, where a significant proportion of its candidates were young people. In 2023, 75% of ADC candidates were between the ages of 25 and 35 years.
The party also highlighted the efforts of its National Youth Leader, Comrade Nixon Odimbu, and She-National Youth Leader, Hauwa Yussuf, in mobilizing the youth. Nwosu invited Nigerian youths to take ownership of the ADC, emphasizing that the party’s vision aligns with the aspirations and needs of the younger generation.
Nwosu concluded that the ADC’s youth strategy aims to recognize and harness their potential as catalysts for change, resonating with the strategic goals of the 2024 World Youth Day.
