The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and political group, Afenifere, has attributed the planned nationwide protests to the policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking through its publicity secretary, Justice Faloye, Afenifere expressed support for the protests while cautioning against violence.
Faloye conveyed the group’s stance during an interview on Arise TV’s Morning Show on Thursday. While Afenifere won’t participate directly in the protests, they fully back the protesters.
The group attributed the planned protests to widespread hunger and harsh economic policies, criticizing the government’s palliatives as inadequate.
“Afenifere is not planning to be part of the protest but we support the fundamental human rights of Nigerians. We have been warning against the hardship. You can’t tell a hungry man not to wait,” said Faloye.
He emphasized the need for economic and political restructuring, dismissing the government’s palliatives as superficial.
Faloye continued, “We acknowledge their rights and saw this coming, but the government refuses to take responsibility for its economic policies. Tinubu brought the 10 days of rage upon himself due to his policies. We understand it as an organic reaction, not just a protest we support, but a protest against anti-people policies.”
Afenifere advocates for peaceful protest and condemns violence, emphasizing that the real issue lies with the government and political thugs, not the people.
