The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has postponed its planned nationwide strike, according to Simji Lumpye, the Zone B coordinator of the union. The decision came after a tripartite meeting involving ASUP, the government, and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) held in Jos on Tuesday.
ASUP had previously issued a 15-day ultimatum to the government on July 19, demanding action on the contentious scheme of service released by NBTE. However, Lumpye announced that the meeting led to significant agreements, including the suspension of the scheme’s implementation and the convening of further discussions with stakeholders to review and amend the document.
He stated that the NBTE’s executive secretary will issue a circular instructing the suspension of the scheme’s implementation to all governing councils, rectors, and provosts. Following this, ASUP’s emergency National Executive Council meeting on July 2 resolved to delay their planned industrial action pending the outcome of these discussions.
Lumpye expressed gratitude to members and the public for their patience, and assured that the union will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure that the agreed actions are implemented effectively.
