Former Real Madrid star Karim Benzema has voiced his support for Vinicius Junior, stating that he believes Vinicius was more deserving of the 2024 Ballon d’Or than Manchester City’s Rodri, who ultimately took the prestigious award. Vinicius, who placed second, reportedly felt disappointed with the outcome, as Real Madrid’s players and representatives boycotted the ceremony in Paris.
Benzema, now with Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Pro League, shared his thoughts, explaining, “I spoke to Vini, he’s sad… he deserved to win the Ballon d’Or. I’ve nothing against Rodri, but I’m on my sofa watching TV, and Rodri doesn’t do anything that makes you say: wow!”
Following the award presentation, Manchester City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, expressed respect for Real Madrid’s choice to skip the ceremony, saying, “If they choose to congratulate us, that’s appreciated. If not, that’s okay too.” Guardiola praised Rodri’s achievement, which was determined by votes from a global panel of journalists and coaches.
Meanwhile, former Argentine striker Sergio Aguero offered a contrasting view, criticizing Real Madrid’s reaction as “entitled.” He remarked, “Rodri is the best player in the world. Football belongs to everyone, not just Real Madrid; they should recognize that.”
