The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja, led by Justice Sylvanus Oriji, has extended the order restricting participants in the #EndBadGovernance protests to the Moshood Abiola National Stadium. The decision came after a motion was filed by Dr. Ogwu James Onoja (SAN), representing the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
The court’s ruling, issued on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, was made in the absence of the 11 defendants, who neither appeared in court nor were represented by legal counsel. The FCT minister’s attorney cited concerns about potential unrest, referencing a statement by Damilare Adenola, who hinted that the protests could extend beyond the initial 10-day period.
Justice Oriji upheld the extension, maintaining the original order issued on July 31, 2024, which limits protests to the National Stadium. The case will be revisited on August 22, 2024. The initial injunction sought to prevent the protest leaders from assembling or demonstrating on public roads, streets, or premises within the FCT, based on concerns about potential disruptions to public order.
