The African Leadership Strategy and Transparency Development Initiative (ALSTDI) has called on President Bola Tinubu to dismiss and prosecute Nasir Isa Kwarra, the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), following allegations of abuse of office, financial impropriety, and gross misconduct. The petition, dated January 8th, 2024, and signed by Kings Abel Adams, raises concerns about Kwarra’s engagement in official transactions with 17 private bank accounts. ALSTDI seeks clarification on whether Kwarra obtained necessary approvals for these transactions.
The petition highlights specific transactions involving individuals, such as Akindulureni Zainab Ohunene, Abalogu Mondale Williams, Fagbemi Akinola Benjamin, and others, for various purposes related to population activities. ALSTDI questions the legitimacy of these transactions and requests information on the total budget for the years 2021, including specific budgeted sums for intercensal population activities and small area level database development.
Additionally, the CSO demands details about the venues, cost implications, and a list of individuals who received payments for these activities. ALSTDI seeks clarification on any approvals from the Ministry of the Interior or delegated offices for conducting official business through private bank accounts. The petition also calls for information on payments made by the Census Department and the Planning and Research Department, along with details on approvals and involved individuals.
In light of these allegations, ALSTDI recommends that Nasir Isa Kwarra be suspended from his position to prevent further abuse of public office. The CSO advocates for a comprehensive and independent investigation into the allegations to ensure transparency and accountability within the National Population Commission.
