Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has issued an apology to the state’s athletes who participated in the 2023 National Youths Games in Asaba, Delta State. The apology comes after the athletes were treated poorly by officials from the Ekiti State Sports Council.
During a reception for the athletes in Ado Ekiti, Governor Oyebanji expressed his regret over the athletes’ treatment and assured them of financial rewards. He acknowledged that the behavior of the sports council officials had embarrassed the athletes, their parents, Ekiti people, and the state as a whole.
Ekiti’s young athletes, known as “Great Ekiti Ambassadors,” won a total of seven medals at the National Youths Games, including two gold, two silver, and three bronze medals.
The athletes had faced embarrassment when they were kitted in inappropriate attire during the opening march past of the games. This incident garnered attention and criticism, leading to the apology from the governor.
Governor Oyebanji stated, “I apologize to all Ekiti indigenes for the embarrassment caused by the sports council officials to all of us, and I hope you accept my apology, but I can assure you that justice will be served.”
He commended the athletes for their impressive performances and pledged the government’s support to help them excel in their respective sports. The governor also revealed plans to establish indoor game centers in the state and renovate various stadia to promote sports development.
Additionally, Governor Oyebanji acknowledged the contributions of his wife, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, and the wife of the former governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, in assisting the athletes during their time in Asaba.
