The family of Professor Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of Nigeria’s National Electoral Commission (NEC), has confirmed his passing at the age of 83 following a brief illness. Nwosu, who died on October 20, 2024, was widely celebrated for his commitment to democracy and his contributions to political science and public administration.
Known for his pivotal role in Nigerian electoral reforms, Professor Nwosu led the NEC from 1989 to 1993 and oversaw the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election, recognized as one of Nigeria’s fairest elections. His academic achievements included degrees from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the University of California, Berkeley. He documented his experiences in publications such as Laying the Foundation for Nigeria’s Democracy, sharing insights into Nigeria’s political landscape.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Stella Nwosu, their four children, and six grandchildren. Funeral details will be shared by the family in due course.
