The Nigerian government, under President Bola Tinubu, has declared Tuesday, October 1st, 2024, a public holiday in celebration of the country’s 64th Independence Day. The announcement was made by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
In his statement, the Minister congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad, commending their resilience and dedication. He emphasized the importance of reflecting on the sacrifices of past heroes and urged citizens to unite in building a better Nigeria.
As part of the Independence Day celebrations, the federal government previously announced a schedule of events, beginning with a World Press Conference on September 26. The Inter-Ministerial Committee, led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, was inaugurated to oversee the celebrations.
The Minister of Interior stressed that the anniversary will be a modest affair, given the current economic challenges the country is facing. Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule in 1960 and will celebrate its 64th anniversary on October 1.
