The Federal Government announced on Wednesday the resumption of mass trials for individuals accused of terrorism and other severe crimes against Nigeria. This initiative aims to enhance social justice through a transparent administrative process.
Abu Michael, spokesperson for the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), stated that over 300 suspects are currently on trial, with five respected judges presiding over dedicated courts to ensure swift justice.
“The ongoing trials align with the International Criminal Justice system and are administered by the Federal High Court of Nigeria. The Complex Casework Group (CCG) of the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, along with other key stakeholders, are coordinating under the supervision of the NCTC and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA),” Michael said.
The trials involve multiple stakeholders, including CCG prosecutors and defense attorneys from the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (LACON). Over 800 case files have been reviewed, and charges have been prepared to facilitate effective prosecution and ensure justice.
Michael added, “Between 2017 and 2018, the trials resulted in 163 convictions, 882 discharges, and 5 acquittals. Inculpable suspects are being deradicalized, engaged in profitable ventures, and efforts to reintegrate them are ongoing.”
The NCTC-ONSA continues to work diligently with relevant authorities to fulfill its mandates and support the current administration’s efforts towards good governance and a just society.
