The Federal Government has announced plans to upgrade the Alau Dam in Maiduguri, Borno State, in a bid to address persistent flooding issues. The announcement was made in a press release by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, following a ministerial visit to assess the region’s flood challenges.
Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, alongside the Minister of State, Bello Goronyo, emphasized that the dam’s upgrade is crucial to providing a lasting solution to the recurring floods that have displaced residents and disrupted livelihoods. A team of experts is already evaluating the dam’s condition to recommend necessary improvements.
The government also assured that steps would be taken to prevent waterborne diseases among displaced persons and to promote better sanitation. Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, expressed gratitude for the swift intervention, highlighting the need for enhanced flood forecasting systems and further investment in climate change mitigation strategies.
