Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya has announced that his administration will struggle to implement the newly approved ₦70,000 minimum wage due to the state’s limited financial resources. This follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent approval of the wage increase, agreed upon with various labor unions.
During a meeting with stakeholders at the Gombe Government House, Yahaya noted, “I cannot pay the ₦70,000 minimum wage, and I suspect many other states are facing similar challenges.”
While he commended the Federal Government for providing rice to the states, Yahaya expressed concern over delays in receiving the promised 20 trucks of rice for Gombe.
Despite these challenges, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to supporting residents through past relief efforts and ongoing investments in human capital, education, health, and agriculture. He emphasized the importance of peaceful protest and collaboration with civil society, labor unions, and traders to address these issues.
Yusuf Ibrahim, Chairman of the Gombe Network of Civil Society Organizations, presented demands on behalf of NGOs and called for transparency regarding the inventory of relief supplies.
