On Tuesday, the Imo State Police Command successfully thwarted an assault by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, Eastern Security Network (ESN), along the Owerri/Aba Road near Owerri Airport. During the altercation, police neutralized one attacker, while others escaped with gunshot wounds, abandoning a Mercedes Jeep with Lagos registration AAA 101 GR.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye reported that the Counter-Terrorism Unit encountered the group during a routine patrol. Following a gunfight, officers secured an AK-47 rifle, 15 rounds of live ammunition, an IPOB/ESN flag, and the abandoned vehicle. No police casualties were reported.
Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma urged the public, especially medical personnel, to report any individuals seeking treatment for gunshot wounds to assist in the ongoing search for the fleeing suspects.
