The Imo State government has announced a ban on touting and the illegal collection of levies within the state. This decision was communicated on Wednesday in a statement released by Chief Cosmos Iwu, the Secretary to the Imo State Government.
The statement highlighted concerns over the resurgence of illegal activities, particularly in Owerri and other towns in the state, where unauthorized individuals have been collecting levies unlawfully.
To address this, the Imo State Internal Revenue Service has been given sole authority to collect all approved levies from relevant parties. The government also advised officials involved in levy collection to act with civility while performing their duties.
Furthermore, all government agencies tasked with levy collection are now required to coordinate their activities with the Imo State Internal Revenue Service. Traffic control personnel were specifically warned to focus on their assigned duties and avoid extorting motorists.
The Imo State government has warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone who violates this directive.
