In anticipation of the planned protests against widespread hunger and economic hardship, the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has called for calm and restraint.
Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, Director General of IPCR, addressed journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, urging Civil Society Organizations, organizers, and other involved parties to exercise caution. He emphasized that while Nigeria is facing tough times, this situation is part of a broader global economic crisis.
IPCR warned against actions that could inflame tensions and disrupt the fragile peace amidst ongoing security challenges in the country. Ochogwu highlighted that protests at this time could jeopardize President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda and have unintended negative consequences.
“Protests, while a fundamental right, can sometimes be counterproductive if not carefully considered,” Ochogwu said. “In this case, the Institute’s warning suggests that protests could disorganize efforts aimed at addressing the nation’s challenges. By cautioning against fanning the ember of crisis and disunity, the Institute emphasizes the need for unity and collective effort in navigating these difficult times.”
IPCR advocates for a thoughtful and strategic approach to addressing national issues, encouraging constructive engagement and collaboration over actions that might undermine peace.
“This call to action is a reminder that, even in the face of adversity, careful consideration and strategic thinking are essential,” Ochogwu continued. “By heeding the Institute’s warning, citizens can contribute to a more stable and peaceful environment, conducive to the success of President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.”
