In response to escalating violence during the nationwide protest, Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi announced a 24-hour curfew on Friday.
In a state broadcast, Governor Namadi described the situation as unfortunate and emphasized the need to restore peace and stability. However, he approved a brief relaxation of the curfew on Friday to allow worshipers to attend Juma’a prayers from noon to 2:30 p.m.
“To ensure the return of peace and stability, we announced the 24-hour curfew. However, for Friday, the curfew will be relaxed between noon and 2:30 p.m. to allow people to attend Friday prayer in the mosque,” Namadi said.
Governor Namadi condemned the violence, which saw peaceful demonstrations turn into incidents of destruction and looting. He stressed that such behavior is unacceptable and contrary to the state’s culture.
“We will not allow it to continue unabated,” he declared. The governor assured that the state, in collaboration with security agencies, will monitor the situation closely and take necessary actions to protect the lives and property of residents from miscreants and hoodlums.
