Kenya’s President William Ruto has nominated Interior Minister Kithuri Kindiki as the new Deputy President following the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua on Thursday. Gachagua, Ruto’s running mate in the 2022 election, was removed by the Senate after being found guilty of five out of eleven charges, marking a historic first under Kenya’s 2010 constitution.
The impeachment has caused a significant political shift in Kenya, a nation often seen as a beacon of stability in East Africa. Gachagua, absent due to hospitalization, faced the charges amid allegations of misconduct. Despite his legal team’s request for a postponement, the Senate moved forward, leading to his ousting.
On Friday, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula announced Kindiki’s nomination for the deputy role, with a parliamentary vote for confirmation expected soon. Kindiki, previously criticized for police brutality during anti-government protests, steps into his new role amidst heightened political tensions.
Gachagua’s impeachment followed a breakdown in his relationship with President Ruto, who had relied on his support during the last election, particularly in the Mount Kenya region. Gachagua remains hospitalized but is in stable condition.
