The Minister of Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has refuted claims that he directed telecom companies, including MTN and Airtel, to disrupt network services during nationwide protests that began on Thursday. Many Nigerians have experienced unusually slow internet speeds, leading to suspicions that the government might be attempting to hinder the demonstrations.
In an interview on Channels TV, Tijani stated, “There’s no instruction to tamper with (phone) networks.” He also condemned the looting of the National Communication Commission (NCC) building in Kano State, highlighting its negative impact on efforts to boost youth employment through technology.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun revealed that a police officer was killed, and others injured during the #EndBadGovernance protests, which turned violent in several locations. Egbetokun lamented the destruction of police stations and the looting of public and private properties, emphasizing that the protests had been hijacked by miscreants. The police have placed all units on red alert to maintain public safety and order.
