In the past year, over 100 psychiatric doctors have left Nigeria to practice abroad, according to Prof. Taiwo Obindo, President of the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria (APN).
Prof. Obindo highlighted the severe impact of brain drain on the psychiatric profession, noting that for every five psychiatric doctors trained in Nigeria, three leave the country. He emphasized the country’s ability to train but not retain medical professionals, as foreign institutions offer enticing remuneration for their skills.
Dr. Olugbenga Owoeye, Medical Director of Federal Neuro-psychiatric Hospital Yaba, echoed these concerns, revealing that the hospital is focusing on training more doctors to mitigate the effects of this ongoing migration. Despite efforts, the brain drain has led to a significant reduction in psychiatric staff, with the hospital training around 90 consultant psychiatric doctors to address the shortage.
