Public commentator Professor Patrick Utomi has raised concerns that Nigeria, under the current federal government, is on a dangerous trajectory toward fascism and dictatorship.
The founder of the Centre for Value in Leadership, Pat Utomi, pointed to the recently withdrawn Counter Subversion Bill, sponsored by the House of Representatives Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, as evidence of the political class’s intent to consolidate power.
Utomi expressed disappointment that National Assembly members have not addressed the ongoing salary controversy and urged Nigerians to begin recalling their lawmakers.
In a statement on his X handle on Thursday, Utomi remarked, “The speaker seeks to imprison anyone who criticizes politicians. Meanwhile, the National Assembly continues to mislead the public about their emoluments, drawn from their employers, the people.”
He added, “Taking what belongs to others without permission is theft. The police should do their job and arrest the National Assembly members for stealing. If they fail, the people should initiate the recall process, starting with the Senate President and Speaker.”
Utomi concluded with a stark warning: “I have repeatedly cautioned against state capture, creeping fascism, and the criminal hijacking of politics in Nigeria. The descent into a fascist dictatorship is evident, yet we are ignoring it just as the Germans did until it engulfed them in WWII.”
