Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), is scheduled to appear at the Force Headquarters today in response to a police summons concerning allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime. This follows an initial invitation by the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) on August 19.
Ajaero will be supported by leaders from industrial unions affiliated with the NLC, civil society allies, and legal representatives. In solidarity, NLC state councils nationwide have been directed to organize peaceful protests at state police commands, while the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on Abuja-based journalists to gather at the Force Headquarters.
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the UK has also expressed concern, urging the British government to pressure Nigeria to cease its alleged repression of trade unions. TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak condemned the Nigerian government’s actions and called for a return to constructive dialogue to address the country’s socio-economic issues.
The police had initially requested Ajaero’s presence for questioning on August 20, but his lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), cited reasons for the delay. The NLC has mobilized its members for a show of solidarity, warning of a potential nationwide strike if Ajaero is detained.
