The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to honor his commitment not to increase fuel prices during the recent negotiations on the ₦70,000 minimum wage. Speaking on Wednesday, Benson Upah, NLC’s Head of Information, emphasized that while the agreed wage may not be ideal, it was a compromise to prevent fuel prices from rising to ₦2,000 per litre.
In an interview with Arise TV, Upah clarified that the NLC is not currently planning a strike but is awaiting decisions from its various bodies. He highlighted the need for patience, stating, “Our strikes are meant to wake the government up, not to harm the country.”
Upah also criticized the government’s right-wing market policies, arguing that they have not been paired with necessary social protection measures, leaving Nigerians to bear the brunt of the harsh economic environment without sufficient support from the government.
