The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to avoid meddling in the tenure of union leaders nationwide. Benson Upah, NLC Head of Information, expressed concerns on Thursday in Abuja over the government’s alleged plan to impose a two-year limit on labor leaders.
Upah argued that such interference would violate Labour Law and International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions, and he suggested that if a two-year tenure is deemed necessary, it should apply universally, including to the President and other high public officials.
He also urged the government to stop interfering with the Labour Party and destabilizing opposition parties. Upah demanded an apology from the police for their recent raid on the NLC headquarters, warning that failure to comply could lead to industrial action or other measures by the Congress.
