The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) says the dissolution of its Kano State executive committees at all levels remains in force and cannot be reversed by any court order.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, dismissed reports that a Kano State High Court had overturned the dissolution of the party’s state, local government and ward executives.
According to Johnson, the National Working Committee (NWC) has not been served with any court process. Therefore, he described the reported court order as “an ordinary street rumour.”
He said media reports claimed that Justice Nasiru Saminu, through an ex-parte order, granted an interim injunction reversing the NWC’s decision. However, he stressed that the party leadership had received no official court document to that effect.
Johnson added that even if such an order existed, it would contradict established legal procedures and precedents. He argued that it was improper for a court to issue an interim injunction against a decision that had already been concluded by the party’s leadership.
“We still regard the whole orchestration as a mere rumour. However, if it is confirmed, we will take firm legal steps to ensure that the purported illegal injunction does not stand,” he said.
He maintained that the court lacked jurisdiction to reverse decisions taken by the party, describing such matters as internal affairs. Consequently, he said the dissolution of the Kano State executives at all levels remains valid.
Johnson further cited several Supreme Court rulings which held that the internal affairs of political parties are non-justiciable. As a result, he said the NNPP decision could not be lawfully overturned by any court.
“If the reported injunction is confirmed to be true, it can only be described as an exercise in legal rascality,” he said.
He added that the party would not hesitate to take appropriate steps to ensure that any judicial officers involved are reported to the National Judicial Council for possible sanctions.
