The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is awaiting directives from the Federal Government regarding a potential increase in corps members’ allowances, following the recent approval of a new minimum wage.
On July 29, 2024, President Tinubu signed a bill into law increasing the minimum wage to ₦70,000. This has raised questions about whether corps members’ stipends will also see an increase. Speculation has circulated that corps members may need to upgrade their bank accounts to accommodate payments exceeding ₦50,000.
However, Caroline Embu, Acting Director of NYSC’s Information and Public Relations unit, clarified on Tuesday that the NYSC has not received any official directives on this matter. She stated that the management of the NYSC cannot issue information on changes to corps members’ pay until the Federal Government provides guidance.
“The purported messages circulating about the need to upgrade bank accounts to receive the new minimum wage are entirely false,” Embu said. She emphasized that any potential increase in corps members’ allowances will be contingent on decisions made by the Federal Government, not the NYSC.
The NYSC’s previous statement, signed by former Director Eddy Megwa, also refuted claims of any immediate changes to corps members’ pay.
For now, corps members are advised to await official announcements regarding any adjustments to their allowances.
