Armed security operatives fired teargas at protesters marching from the MKO Abiola National Stadium to Eagle Square on Friday, resulting in one protester feared dead while trying to escape. The protesters, who began their march at 12:39 pm, regrouped at the MKO Abiola National Stadium by 1:50 pm and engaged in a heated exchange with security forces.
The demonstrators warned against the use of force and demanded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu address their grievances. They called for the return of fuel subsidies to lower petrol prices and an end to corruption within the subsidy regime. Chanting slogans like “End Bad Government” and “Bring Back Subsidy,” the protesters made their voices heard.
Earlier in the day, the protesters had gathered at various locations in Abuja, including the Berger Roundabout in Wuse Zone 6, starting at 9:06 am, before marching to the MKO Abiola Stadium.
A helicopter was seen flying over the stadium as the protesters assembled, adding to the tense atmosphere. Security forces, including personnel from the Army Headquarters Garrison Command, NSCDC, and DSS, were present, with FCT Commissioner of Police Bennett Igweh visiting the area earlier.
