Renowned Nigerian singer and actress Onyeka Onwenu, known as the ‘Elegant Stallion,’ passed away tragically after performing at a private birthday celebration in Lagos. The 72-year-old music icon collapsed shortly after her performance and was pronounced dead at Reddington Hospital in Victoria Island.
Onwenu was attending the birthday celebration of Mrs. Stella Okoli, founder of Emzor Pharmaceuticals. Eyewitnesses reported that after her performance, Onwenu returned to her seat and suddenly slumped. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to the hospital, she could not be revived. The cause of her death remains unconfirmed.
A source close to the family expressed deep sorrow, saying, “It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu had just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceuticals this night, and after performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital but couldn’t make it.”
The event, attended by dignitaries including Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, ended on a somber note with the news of Onwenu’s passing.
Born on May 31, 1952, Onyeka Onwenu was a multifaceted artist whose career spanned over four decades. She was celebrated not only as a singer and songwriter but also as an actress, journalist, and politician. Her music, which blended highlife, reggae, and pop, often addressed social and political issues. Some of her most popular songs include “One Love,” “Iyogogo,” and “Ekwe.”
