Nigerian powerlifter Onyinyechi Mark made history at the Paris 2024 Paralympics by winning the gold medal in the women’s 61kg powerlifting event, setting a new Paralympic record with a 150kg lift. This impressive achievement surpassed the previous record held by fellow Nigerian Lucy Ejike.

Mark’s victory secured Nigeria’s third medal at the Games, ahead of China’s Cui Jianjin, who lifted 140kg for silver, and Mexico’s Amelia Perez, who earned bronze. Nigeria continues its strong legacy in Paralympic powerlifting, building on past successes from athletes like Lucy Ejike and Bose Omolayo.

In contrast, Nigeria finished the 2024 Olympic Games without any medals, marking a disappointing campaign. The sports ministry now faces the challenge of preparing for the next Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
